Wire Rope Sling Parts And Components
There are many types of wire rope slings, among which the most common types are the following three kinds, they all consist of certain components. - Spliced Wire Rope Sling
Spliced wire rope sling is made by pressing and machining of wire rope press sleeve machine. It uses the sleeve to press one or both ends of the wire rope into a circular shape. Some wire rope slings with thimbles, some without. So, spliced wire rope sling consists of rope core, sleeve, and thimble.
- ROPE CORE
The main function of the wire rope core is to support the wire rope, in order to achieve a stable cross-sectional structure, increase the flexibility and toughness of the wire rope, lubricate the wire, reduce friction, and improve the service life of the wire rope.
Common types of rope core are fiber core (such as hemp, cotton) and steel core. Fiber core including natural fiber core and synthetic fiber core, natural fiber core such as sisal, jute, cotton thread, etc., synthetic fiber core including polyethylene and polypropylene filament, etc.. It is mainly to lubricate the effect of corrosion to delay the wire rope.
The steel core wire rope is more wear-resistant than the fiber core wire rope, anti-extrusion, with higher service life, break tension is also relatively high, and the softness is slightly lower. Because of wear-resistant and pressure-resistant , steel core wire rope is generally applied to the crane. It can be used in the working environment of high temperature places, and can withstand the extrusion of external force transverse to the steel wire rope.
- SLEEVE
Spliced wire rope sling would use sleeving swaging process, which is of stable quality, high production capacity, and reliability, as well as mass production.

- THIMBLE
The function of the wire rope thimble is to connect other components and tie around the end of the rope to prevent excessive bending and abrasion. It is an important part of the wire rope sling.
1) the thimble should be smooth and flat, there should not be any damage to the wire rope cracks, defects, sharp edges and surface roughness, and inequality defects. The tip of the thimble should be free to fit the wire rope, and the tip part should be cut short to half of the groove depth.
2) the surface of the thimble should be hot dipped galvanized, and it should be smooth and flat, there should be no defects such as leakage, zinc particles, bubbles, and cracks, and the galvanized layer should have sufficient adhesion strength in normal application.
3) the material of the thimble can be stainless steel or high-quality carbon steel.
4) the thimble safety load should be at least 32% of the wire rope breaking the tension.
5) the thimble should be used to meet the specifications of the wire rope, the diameter of the pin shall not be less than two times the diameter of the wire rope.
- Wire Rope Bridle Sling
Spliced wire rope sling is made into single-leg, 2-leg, 3-leg, 4-leg, or multi-leg wire rope slings, known as Wire Rope Bridle Sling. At one end of the swaged wire rope sling is the link and at the other end is the end fitting. So, wire rope bridle sling consists of spliced wire rope sling, link, and end fitting.

Wire Rope Sling Cores
The core is the inner part of the wire rope, and there are two types of wire rope cores: fiber core, and steel core. This section will list the differences between each type.
What is the main function of the wire rope core?
- support the rope strand to keep a certain cross-sectional shape, reduce the contact stress and extrusion deformation between the wires

- Fiber Core (FC)
Fiber core wire rope is composed of a fiber rope in the middle, with the letter FC said. It includes natural fiber core and synthetic fiber core,

Natural fiber core could store more grease, lubricate the wire rope, prolong the service life of wire rope.
- Steel Core (IWS/IWR)

- Steel wire: the basic strength unit of wire rope, requires high strength and toughness.

The steel core wire rope of the same diameter is larger than the breaking tension of the hemp core wire rope, and the load borne is also large.
- The difference in quality
The steel core wire rope is more wear-resistant and anti-extrusion than the fiber core stainless steel wire rope, with higher service life, and relatively high breaking tension, the softness is relatively low. Because of the resistance to wear and pressure, steel core wire rope is generally used in cranes or winches. The steel core wire rope in high-temperature resistance is higher than the fiber core wire rope.
- The difference in price
The price of steel core wire rope is relatively higher than fiber core steel core wire rope, but considering the service life and the tension, steel core wire rope will be relatively good. So in general, the cost of steel core wire rope is lower.

- The surface of the thimbles should be hot dipped galvanized, and the surface should be smooth and flat, there should be no defects such as leakage, zinc particles, bubbles, and cracks, and the galvanized layer should have sufficient adhesion strength in normal application.
- The material of the thimbles can be A3 steel or 15, 35 high-quality carbon steel.
- Thimbles’ safety load should not be less than 32% of the minimum breaking tension of the wire rope.
- When using thimbles, the diameter of the shaft pin shall not be less than two times the diameter of the wire rope.
Wire Rope Sling Sleeves
Wire rope sling sleeves are used to secure the ends of wire rope slings for added safety and strength. They are available in a wide variety of materials and sizes, depending on the type of wire rope sling and the application.
There are two main types of wire rope sling sleeves in our SichWirerope rigging hardware manufacturer:

Wire Rope Sling Capacity Formula
Commonly, we will provide Wire Rope Sling Capacity Chart for you
Wire rope sling capacity formula = (Diameter of rope squared) x Length of rope x Safe Working Load (in lbs) / 8.
*Example:
A wire rope with a diameter of 1/2 inch and a length of 8 feet has a safe working load of 1200 lbs.
Wire rope sling capacity = (0.5^2) x 8 x 1200 / 8
Wire rope sling capacity = 300 lbs.
And if you need to calculate the bridle wire rope sling, the capacity of a wire rope sling is determined by multiplying the vertical capacity by the horizontal capacity. The vertical capacity is determined by multiplying the diameter of the rope by the strength of the rope, then multiplying this product by the number of legs of the sling. The horizontal capacity is determined by dividing the total capacity by the number of legs of the sling.
*Example:
If the rope is 7/16″ in diameter and has a strength of 8,400 lbs. and the sling has two legs,
the vertical capacity of the sling is:
7/16″ x 8,400 lbs. x 2 legs = 66,400 lbs.
The horizontal capacity of the sling is:
66,400 lbs. ÷ 2 legs = 33,200 lbs.
